Q&A on Computers!
What type of computer should I buy?
Buying a new computer should be a long term solution unless this is a secondary computer. Think of everything you’ll be using the computer for for at least the next 5 years.
Does a good video card make any difference?
Definitely, if you use any of Adobe programs or anything similar, they all use hardware acceleration only available through a dedicated video card.
What is more important? More RAM, Larger Hard drive, faster processor?
This will vary based on what you prioritize the most. More RAM means you can do more multitasking, Larger Hard Drive means you can store more without worrying about using external sources such as hard drives and iCloud, and a faster processor means you will spend less time waiting for programs to respond to your requests.
Should I get a 16” MacBook Pro or 13” MacBook Pro?
If you need a dedicated video card 16’” is definitely the way to go. If you need a secondary computer and you don’t need a video card the 13” is the way to go.
Do I really need Applecare+?
Having AppleCare + can save you a lot of money in the event that the computer is accidentally damaged. Liquid damage and accidental damage involving replacement of the top case and screen are very expensive.
How long will a new computer last?
Most Macs last at least 5 years. The limitations are more software based than hardware based.
Should I be worried about computer viruses on a Mac?
This should always be a concern no matter which OS you’re on but the Mac has built-in protection to keep you safe. If a file has a virus, you should not use your computer to access that information.
Here are some best practices to keep you safe:
Only download and install files from known good sources such as school, Apple directly, etc.
Do not download random files from external websites, unknown sources, or random prompts.
Do not use torrents, download managers, or other software to download free software.
Do not open links sent to your email address from unknown sources or uncredible locations.
